6. How to Help
It can be hard to watch someone you care about struggle. You can make a huge difference but remember you can't force them to change.
● Be a Listener, not a Judge: Pick a quiet time to talk. Don't shout or interrupt. Just listen to what they are going through and let them know you care.
● Say "I'm Worried": Focus on how their use is affecting them. Say, "I'm really worried about your health," rather than criticizing their choices.
● Offer Practical Help: Suggest going to the GP or River CGL (Liverpool Drug and Alcohol Services) together. Offer to sit in the waiting room or make the phone call for them.
● Look After Yourself: You can't help anyone if you're burning out. Find support for yourself, too (see Section 9, Sanctuary Family Support).
