6. How to Help

It can be hard to watch someone you care about struggle. You can make a huge difference but remember you can't force them to change.

Be a Listener, not a Judge: Pick a quiet time to talk. Don't shout or interrupt. Just listen to what they are going through and let them know you care.

Say "I'm Worried": Focus on how their use is affecting them. Say, "I'm really worried about your health," rather than criticizing their choices.

Offer Practical Help: Suggest going to the GP or River CGL (Liverpool Drug and Alcohol Services) together. Offer to sit in the waiting room or make the phone call for them.

Look After Yourself: You can't help anyone if you're burning out. Find support for yourself, too (see Section 9, Sanctuary Family Support).
